Michael Bloomberg considering 2016 presidential run as an Independent

Former New York City mayor Michael R. Bloomberg is seriously considering a bid for the United States presidency in 2016, sources originally told The New York Times on Friday afternoon, published Saturday morning. Bloomberg, 73, would run for president as an independent candidate, clearly disillusioned with the Republican and Democratic Parties.

Bloomberg is a centrist, fiscally conservative and socially liberal. Bloomberg supports same sex marriage, and abortion, which most Democratic candidates support. Bloomberg has set a deadline of March to announce whether he would run. An independent candidate has to have ballot access in all 50 states. Bloomberg, according to the New York Times report, is said to be worried about far left Vermont Senator Bernard Sanders (Ind.), who is an independent, but a democratic socialist, a word that is not popular with mainstream American voters. He is also dismayed by the fact that Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.), the former secretary of state, has not sealed the nomination against a socialist who wants to redistribute the wealth, and slash defense spending.

Bloomberg is also dismayed by the far right conservatism that businessman Donald Trump and Texas Senator Ted Cruz has added to the political discourse in America.

Bloomberg’s aides say that he would offer  a “non-ideological, bipartisan, results-oriented vision” that is not being offered in the race to date.

Bloomberg could appeal to Northeasterners, especially in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, some wealthy Westerners, and Floridians, where there is a large Jewish population. Bloomberg would be the oldest president, if elected, and the first Independent president in U.S. history. He also would be one of the wealthiest as well.
